Over 470 prisoners p(–foul word(s) removed–)ed through a long tunnel excavated right outside the Kandahar jail situated in the southern area of Afghanistan.
The length of the tunnel extends for about hundreds of meters wherein most of the escaped inmates were identified to be rebels of Taliban. The Kandahar City jail holds more than 1,200 inmates.
According to the office of the provincial governor for Kandahar City, some of those prisoners have been recaptured but there were no further information given.
Taliban spokesman (–foul word(s) removed–)umed that a 320m underp(–foul word(s) removed–) was dug and the excavation was estimated to finish for at least five months.
A report from Zabiullah Mujahid reveals that among the prisoners who were able to escape were more than a hundred Taliban commanders along with those who had been into a rebellion.
Meanwhile, the media says that the Taliban group were frequently making overstated claims.
General Ghulam Dastageer Mayar declared a report saying, “A tunnel hundreds of metres long was dug from the south of the prison into the prison and 476 political prisoners escaped last night.”
The tunnel was long enough that one of the escaped prisoners describe that it takes more than 30 minutes for him to walk along such p(–foul word(s) removed–)ageway. An idea was concluded that the tunnel was excavated from a nearby house located outside the Kandahar prison.
For about three years, reports said that the said jailbreak was noted to be a second major escape. It was way back June 2008 when the Kandahar prison gates was destroyed through a suicide bomber that almost 900 inmates were freed. Just like the present jailbreak, most of the prisoners were suspected insurgents as well.
It was said that pounds amounting to millions have been expended in order to upgrade the Kandahar City jail. However, the breakout happened almost three years ago was still followed by a major upsurge in violence.
If Afghan authorities would request the International Security (–foul word(s) removed–)istance Force led by the Nato, they will be willing to commit themselves to (–foul word(s) removed–)ist the Afghan controlled prison.
