Voting for Haiti’s new leader had begun. Vying for presidency are Mirlande Manigat and Michel Martelly, election officials have stated.

Manigat, 70, is former first lady while Martelly, 50, is a popular singer. And now, the people of Haiti start to exercise their power to choose who is worthy to rule for their country that was previously hit by a terrible earthquake.

The election was officially held in the Caribbean nation and peacefully ended at around 4pm on Sunday. Partial election results will be published on March 31 as the final list of winning candidates will be posted on April 16.

It was reported that the United Nations will also aid for the monitoring of the electoral outcome. There are at least 4.7 million eligible voters in Haiti. According to the UN peacekeeping mission head named Edmond Mulet, an increase in the number of voting participation would likely come.

On the other hand, it was noted that billions have been expended to due Haiti’s reconstruction following its destruction in 2010. Quake victims were counted to be thousands and majority of their important documents have been lost or ruined by the tragedy.

And since Haiti is still under recovery, the country is still trying to fix those problems especially processing on the replacement on lost voter’s ID and any other necessary documents.

At present, the Haitians still has this question on who would be dominating the race. Whether it would be the popular singer or the former first lady, hope is yet to come for the Haiti people.
