Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake Hits Davao Oriental (August 10, 2014)

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that a Magnitude 5,4 earthquake hit Davao Oriental on Sunday evening, August 10, 2014.

The moderately strong earthquake which is tectonic in origin struck off Davao Oriental at exactly 9:33 p.m. The tremor of the Davao Oriental earthquake was recorded about 173 km southeast of Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental.

According to Phivolcs, there are no reported damages as of press time but there are expected aftershocks from the jolt. Intensity IV and III were felt in neighboring provinces particularly in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur and  Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur respectively.

Intensity II was also felt in General Santos City while Baslig City was affected by Intensity I.

Phivolcs noted on its official website that Magnitude 5 and 6 earthquakes are the “earthquakes with moderate strength and are felt over the wide areas; some of them cause small local damages near the epicenter.”

The local government of Davao Oriental has yet to release an official statement regarding the earthquake which hit the “Durian” capital earlier.

Meanwhile, based upon the latest earthquake bulletin of Phivolcs, another earthquake has occurred in the southern part of the country particularly in Leyte which was hit with 3.4 Magnitude earthquake at around 10 p.m.
