The lone Philippine representative to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Michael Christian Martinez, got the attention of international media particularly the United States sports reporters during the opening ceremony of the prestigious winter Olympics.

The 17-year-old figure skater from Paranaque City managed to grab a piece of spotlight in the worldwide sporting events hosted by Russia. Michel Christian Martinez marched with the Philippine flag as he and his team joins the opening parade of the 88 countries and territories participating in the Olympic Games.

The commentators of the event which was held yesterday night at around 12:00 midnight, called Martinez as “a highly-talented figure skater.” Aside from being single out during the opening ceremony, the lone Pinoy representative was also a subject of profiling by Nicholas McCarvel of NBCOlympics.com

Michael Martinez’ profile on NBA Olympics detailed his journey from “an air-conditioned shopping mall in humid Manila at the age of nine.” The profile added further that “for three years he skated once a week at the mall rink, taking lessons and building the foundation for the skills that would one day help him to the Olympics.” the profile noted.

The journey of Michael Martinez will surely make the Filipino community not only in the Philippines but also worldwide to be proud of him as he already listed in the history of Philippines as the first figure skater to compete in the Winter Olympics.
