Nelson Mandela Dies at 95 in Johannesburg, South Africa (Video)

Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa and known worldwide as an anti-apartheid icon has died at the age of 95 for lung infection after spending three months in a hospital. He has been receiving intensive medical care at home before his death in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The 95-year-old leader led South Africa’s transition from white-minority rule in the 1990’s, after he was jailed for 27 years for his political activities. The announcement of Nelson Mandela’s death was made by South African President Jacob Zuma.

According to the South African President, Mr. Mandela was at peace. Pres. Zuma was quoted as saying “Our nation has lost its greatest son,” Mr Zuma said. He added further that “Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss.” President Zuma stated.

The announcement of Nelson Mandela’s death was released on Thursday which plunged his nationa and the world into mourning for a man hailed by global leaders as a moral giant.

Nelson Mandela is a former Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a respected world leader. Tributes began flooding almost immediately for a man who an iconic global symbol of struggle against injustice and of racial reconciliation. Nelson Mandela would receive a full state funeral as announced by Pres. Zuma. The flags of South Africa is ordered to be flown at half mast nationwide.
