LOREN LEGARDA’S PLATFORMS – Here are the accomplishments of Antique Representative Loren Legarda and the things she promises to do if she gets elected as Senator in the May 2022 Elections.

Before becoming a public servant, Legarda was known for being one of the trusted broadcast journalists in the Philippines during the 1980s and the 1990s. Prior to being a journalist, she appeared in her first TV commercial in 1976 when she was just 15 years old. Legarda also did a print ad for Pond’s cold cream in 1977.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

Loren Legarda graduated cum laude from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree in Broadcast Communications. She completed her Master’s Degree in National Security Administration at the National Defense College of the Philippines and became a reserve officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Legarda established the Luntiang Pilipinas Foundation in 1998. This group spearheaded the planting of 2 million trees in public spaces across the country. In the same year, she became the youngest woman Senator of the Philippines, garnering more than 15 million votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Loren Legarda is a three-term Senator who authored and co-authored 115 laws including the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 (RA 9994); the Barangay Kabuhayan Act (RA 9509); the Magna Carta for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (RA 9501); the Agri-Agra Reform Credit Act (RA 10000); the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act (RA 9262); the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710); the Anti-Child Labor Law (RA 9231); the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act (RA 9208).

In 1995, she received The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) award for excellence in media. She took part in the successful peace negotiations with the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), the New People’s Army (NPA), and the National Democratic Front (NDF) in 1999. Two years after that, Legarda led a humanitarian mission together with Bishop Jesus Varela, and Bishop Tomas Millamena. Becaue of this Major Noel Buan was released in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro by their NPA captors.

She was an awardee for the environment by the Priyadarshni Academy in Mumbai, India and until now, she continues to strengthen her environmental advocacy.

  • Focus on addressing segregation of waste at source, recycling, and composting.
  • Build awareness of the laws that protect the environment. (exp; Mining Act)
  • Urged households to start the solution at their homes in addressing waste disposal issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Regain the nation’s economy through existing government programs: DOLE’s Pangkabuhayan, DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program, DTI’s Shared Service Facilities, DOST’s Community Empowerment thru Science & Technology, and others
  • Upgrading health facilities
  • Health recovery through vaccines
  • Quality Education
  • Pushing for the One Tablet, One Student Act that would provide each student with resources to cope with the blended learning system
  • Upgrading of the salary of public school teachers from entry-level Salary Grade 11 to 15
