Resort in Zamboanga City Receives Criticism After Alleged Killing of Stray Dogs by an Employee
A resort in Zamboanga City is facing heavy criticism online after a video showing the alleged killing of stray dogs by one of its employees.
A resident named Ann Heneral shared a video of the incident, which immediately caught public attention. The post circulated on social media and garnered various reactions from the online community.
According to her, they heard unusual noises coming from dogs in the area before hearing two gunshots in quick succession. After a few moments, they witnessed a disturbing scene that raised concern among animal lovers and local residents.
In the video, a man can be seen dragging a dog that appeared to be lifeless. Barangay Bolong Chairman Ruben Coros said he immediately visited the resort after seeing the viral post on social media.
According to Coros, the resort owner had previously sought help from the barangay several times regarding the growing number of stray dogs entering the property.
The increase in stray dogs was reportedly linked to leftover food discarded by beachgoers, which attracted the animals to the area. To help address the problem, the barangay had even provided a cage that could be used to safely capture the dogs.
Coros said he was surprised that the resort did not seek assistance from the barangay before the incident occurred.
Based on information shared with him by the resort supervisor, an employee allegedly shot the dogs using an airsoft gun. The resort management has since reportedly dismissed the employee involved in the incident.
The issue has also reached local government officials. A city councilor plans to file a resolution condemning the alleged act of animal cruelty and is calling for an investigation by both the City Veterinary Office and the Philippine National Police.

Meanwhile, City Veterinarian Dr. Arcadio Cavan Jr. explained that under the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, a video alone may not be enough evidence. Witnesses who saw the incident may need to provide testimony to support any possible case.
The resort management has declined to give a statement to the media as investigations continue.
