Street Vendor Sustained Injuries After Building Debris Falls
An 18-year-old street vendor was injured after being struck by falling debris from a building in Barangay Pedro Cruz, San Juan City.
On Monday evening (June 29, 2026), the young vendor was selling street food beside the building along F. Blumentritt Street when a portion of its exterior plaster suddenly broke off and fell. The debris hit him on the head, shoulder, and foot, causing minor injuries.
A security guard from the building quickly responded and brought the victim to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Although the vendor is now in stable condition, doctors recommended that he undergo a CT scan and X-ray to ensure that he did not suffer any serious internal injuries.
Local officials said the incident could have been much worse if it had happened earlier in the day. The area is located near a public market entrance and is usually busy with pedestrians.
Fortunately, the market was already closing at the time of the incident, reducing the number of people in the area.
“May scratch po dito sa ulo kasi tinamaan siya sa ulo ng debris. ‘Yun din po ang pinagpapasalamat namin close na ‘yung palengke kaya hindi siya busy street talaga. Diyan pa naman po yung daanan at pasukan ng palengke,” Brgy. Pedro Cruz kagawad Melfer Laao said.
Authorities are now looking into the possible causes of the falling debris. Barangay officials believe that the age of the building may have contributed to the incident. Vibrations from vehicles using the parking area above the structure are also being considered as a possible factor.
To prevent another accident, the affected section of the building has been temporarily closed to the public. The barangay has also coordinated with the San Juan City Engineering Office, which will conduct a thorough inspection of the structure and determine whether additional repairs or safety measures are needed.
The management of the building assured the public that they will shoulder all medical expenses of the injured vendor. They also pledged to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation and repair the damaged portion of the building as soon as possible.
Residents in the area noted that the building has been standing for around two decades and houses both a supermarket and a public market. Many expressed relief that no other people were hurt and hope that proper inspections will help prevent similar incidents in the future.
