15-Year-Old Suspect in Tacloban School Shooting Faces Murder Charges; 14-Year-Old Under Intervention Program
The 15-year-old suspect in Tacloban school shooting was charged with murder, but the 14-year-old culprit has no criminal liability.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has filed criminal charges against the 15-year-old suspect involved in the shooting incident at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
During inquest proceedings held at the Hall of Justice in Tacloban City, the Philippine National Police filed three counts of murder, three counts of frustrated murder, and multiple counts of serious physical injuries against the minor.
These charges stem from the victims who lost their lives and those who were injured during the shooting. The case is currently under review by the Prosecutor’s Office, which will assess the evidence and determine whether there is sufficient basis to proceed with the charges in court.
Prosecutors will carefully examine all documents, testimonies, and findings submitted by investigators before making a decision on the next legal steps.
Meanwhile, the 14-year-old suspect linked to the incident remains under the custody of the City Social Welfare and Development Office. Under Republic Act No. 9344, also known as the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, children below a certain age are exempt from criminal liability.
Instead of facing criminal prosecution, the younger suspect will undergo an intervention program designed to provide guidance, counseling, and rehabilitation.
Investigators also revealed that paraffin test results showed positive findings for gunpowder nitrates on the right hands of both minors. In addition, examinations confirmed that the firearm recovered in connection with the incident had been discharged.
Police officials said they could no longer provide further details regarding the progress of the case because it is now under the jurisdiction of the Prosecutor’s Office. The agency will handle the evaluation and resolution of the complaints as legal proceedings move forward.
