Tricycle Driver Helps Wife Become Teacher and Earns Master’s and Doctor’s Degree
A tricycle driver helped his wife achieve her dream of becoming a teacher and eventually earning a master’s degree and a doctorate degree.
The couple JR Vargas and Haycel Cantor inspired a lot of Filipinos. Their journey shows how love, hard work, and determination can help turn dreams into reality.
Their story began in 2010 in Ilagan City. At that time, Haycel was still a student who worked as a house helper while trying to finish her studies. JR was working as a construction worker at a project inside the school she attended.
Although they came from simple backgrounds, they shared a strong desire to build a better future.
Haycel had always dreamed of becoming a teacher. However, financial difficulties forced her to take a vocational course instead. JR also enrolled in a vocational program while continuing his construction work.
As they got to know each other, their friendship grew into a relationship that eventually led to marriage in 2012.
Even after becoming a wife and mother, Haycel never gave up on her dream of teaching. Seeing her determination, JR encouraged her to continue her education. To support their family and his wife’s studies, he worked tirelessly as a tricycle driver, often spending long hours on the road from early morning until late at night.
His sacrifices paid off when Haycel successfully completed her education degree and became a licensed teacher. Despite facing criticism and judgment from some people because of their different professions, the couple remained focused on their goals.
“Masaya, sir. Proud ako, sir, kasi doctorate na rin siya. Nakapagtapos na siya, sir,” JR said.
JR continued supporting his wife as she pursued higher education. Through years of hard work and perseverance, Haycel earned her master’s degree and is now set to complete her doctorate degree this month.
