Lifesaver Mistaken as Thief During Powerful Quake in General Santos City
A man who was mistaken for thief has turned out to be a hero and lifesaver during the powerful earthquake in General Santos City.
Amidst the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake in General Santos City, a man who was initially accused of being a thief has been recognized for his bravery after helping save lives. A video that quickly spread online showed a man inside a damaged fast-food restaurant shortly after the earthquake struck.
Because of the limited information available at the time, some people who saw the footage assumed that he was attempting to steal from the establishment while emergency conditions were unfolding.
However, reports from responding authorities later revealed a very different story. The man was identified as Ramon Capulong, a construction worker and Army reservist from Lanton, Barangay Apopong, General Santos City.
According to responders, Capulong was not inside the damaged building to take anything. Instead, he entered the area to help people trapped beneath the debris.
Authorities said that amid the strong shaking and the collapse of parts of the structure, Capulong acted quickly and courageously. Using the skills and training he gained as a reservist, he helped rescue two individuals who were trapped inside the damaged building.
The victims included an elderly man and a service crew member who were unable to escape on their own.
Firefighter Michael Miguel, one of the responders at the scene, reported that Capulong continued helping despite the danger around him. Falling debris and aftershocks posed serious risks, but he remained focused on getting the trapped individuals to safety.
After the rescue was completed, Capulong quietly left the area. Because he departed before many people learned the incident, some viewers of the viral video misunderstood his actions and wrongly assumed he was involved in theft.
