Jonvic Remulla revealed that he had this conversation with Jinggoy Estrada
Depatment of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla said that he gave two options to Senator Jinggoy Estrada following the latter’s recent legal issue.
Ombudsman Boying Remulla stated a few days ago that his office filed plunder and graft charges against Estrada in connection with the flood control projects scandal.
It was alleged that Estrada was involved in illegal budget insertions in the Department of Public Works and Highways, as well as illicit payouts amounting to P573 million.
Amid the expected issuance of a warrant of arrest by the Sandiganbayan, based on the report from ABS-CBN News, Remulla has discussed with Estrada the options that he has.
“Surrender or arrest. He mentioned that he needed knee replacement surgery. I replied that it’s up to the Sandiganbayan’s appreciation. Our job is to process his arrest and submit him to the Sandiganbayan,” Sec. Jonvic Remulla said.
Amid the issue, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said that he will “exhaust all legal remedies” after plunder and graft cases were filed against him.
His legal counsel released a statement saying that Estrada’s camp is preparing the necessary steps to prove his innocence and challenge the accusation against the lawmaker by presenting pieces of evidence.
One of these was the Senate Legislative Budget Research and Monitoring Office (LBRMO) letter indicating he did not make insertions in the 2025 national budget.
Meanwhile, this is the third time that Estrada has faced a legal issue. The first one was in 2001 when he was arrested and charged with plunder. This was after the ouster of his father, former President Erap Estrada.
In 2014, Estrada faced graft charges related to the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) misuse. However, he was released after posting a bail of P1.33 million in September 2017.
