Assumption College Removes Loren Legarda From ‘Wall of Empowered Women’

Loren Legarda Under Fire As Assumption Takes Down Her Portrait

LOREN LEGARDA – Senator Loren Legarda is making headlines after students from her alma mater supported the removal of her portrait from a prestigious honor wall.

Loren Legarda is facing criticism after her portrait was reportedly removed from the “Wall of Empowered Women” at Assumption College, following concerns raised by the school’s student council over her recent political actions.

In an official statement released Friday, the student leaders of Assumption College explained that they supported the call to remove Legarda’s portrait because they believed she “no longer reflects the values that Assumption upholds.” According to the council, recognition displayed within the institution should symbolize more than accomplishments alone.

The student council emphasized that honors given by the school “must reflect not only achievement, but also character, responsibility and moral courage.”

Photos circulating on social media appeared to show that Legarda’s portrait had already been taken down from the university’s Wall of Empowered Women, a space dedicated to distinguished female figures connected to the institution.

“The Assumption Student Council stands firm in its position regarding alumna Sen. Loren Legarda and the call for the removal of her portrait from the Wall of Empowered Women,” the council said in a post.

The controversy emerged amid recent political developments in the Senate. In its statement, the student council associated its position with the leadership shake-up in the chamber, which it referred to as a “Senate coup” that “abruptly unseated” former Senate President Vicente Sotto III.

The council also pointed to Legarda’s support for Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate president after Sotto announced that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte would continue once the Articles of Impeachment were formally received.

“The takeover occurred as the chamber prepared to receive the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte, who stands accused of grave misuse of public funds and betrayal of public trust,” the council said.

“Its timing raised serious concerns that the move was politically engineered to delay or influence the proceedings,” the council said.

Earlier this week, Legarda was also elected Senate President pro tempore after the new Senate majority moved to declare all leadership positions vacant.

The student council stressed that public officials should always remain accountable for their actions.

“No public office grants immunity from the standards of ethical conduct. Any act that enables impunity and obstruction of justice, however subtle or procedural, diminishes public trust,” it added.

According to the council, the Wall of Empowered Women recognizes female leaders “whose actions continue to embody the principles of truth, justice and public accountability.”

The student leaders also called on Legarda to reassess her recent decisions and “reflect on the principles she once upheld as a student and as a public figure.”

“We express our earnest hope that Senator Legarda will confront this moment with integrity and a clear sense of duty,” the council said.

“It remains within her capacity to rebuild the trust of a community that once regarded her as an alumna of distinction. Now is the time to prove that such trust was not misplaced,” it added.

The statement was signed by student leaders from the academic years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027. As of posting time, Legarda’s office had yet to issue an official response regarding the matter.
