Vice Pres. Sara Duterte Cites Effect of Caravans on Environment
SARA DUTERTE – The Vice President called for a permanent ban on the motorcades and the vehicle caravans set to show support for her father, former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
Former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte remains detained under the custody of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands since March 2025. The ICC recently conducted the confirmation of charges on the case against the former President.
Amid his ICC detention, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte claims that he wants to be remembered as a “faithful servant of the people”. The former President who is faced with three (3) counts of murder as alleged crimes against humanity has accepted that he might die in prison as per his camp.
Duterte waived his right to personally appear at the hearing of the ICC. In a letter addressed to the foreign court, he reiterated his refusal to recognize its jurisdiction over him. He claimed that he is old and frail and wants the court to respect his peace in the cell which they had put him in.
At the confirmation of charges hearing, former President Rodrigo Duterte was represented by his lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman. During the proceedings, Kaufman asserted that Duterte was innocent of the allegations, emphasizing that there was no direct order from the former president to kill drug suspects.
Amid the ICC detention of former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, his children are taking turns in visiting the former President. Vice Pres. Sara Duterte previously expressed her belief that the actions of the foreign court allegedly points to the imprisonment of the former President.
Vice Pres. Sara Duterte also believes that Pres. Bongbong Marcos allegedly committed an impeachable offense over the arrest and the transfer of the custody of former Pres. Duterte to the ICC. As per Malacañang, the Palace previously claimed that the government acted on the arrest in lieu of its commitment with the Interpol.
Recently, following the recent increase in the fuel prices and the serious environment concerns, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte called for a permanent ban on motorcades and vehicle caravans conducted to show support for former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte as well as to protest against the supposed corruption in the government.
Through a statement post on his official Facebook page, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte called on the Filipinos to explore other ways to express their support to their father or call for accountability and to be mindful of the impacts of the protests that involve motorcades and caravans. Amid the call of the Duterte supporters for the return of the former President, Duterte’s lawyer previously expressed his hope that the ICC will dismiss the charges against the former President.
