Man Who Blocked Mining Firm’s Truck, Now the Winning Mayor in Sibuyan

Newly Elected Mayor San Fernando, Romblon Is Anti-Mining Advocate

The newly elected mayor of San Fernando, Romblon went viral after blocking a mining company’s truck.

Nanding Marin, a popular environmental defender, has been officially declared the new mayor of San Fernando, Romblon. His victory in the 2025 elections is seen as a major win for anti-mining groups on Sibuyan Island.

On May 13, 2025, the Municipal Board of Canvassers confirmed Marin’s win over former mayor Salem Tansingco. Marin became popular in February 2023 when he stood in front of a truck belonging to Altai Mining Corporation during a tense standoff in Sitio Bato, Barangay España. His action gained public support and brought attention to the island’s fight against mining.

Mayor

Marin has promised to stay firm in his position against mining activities. He plans to strengthen existing mining moratoriums in the barangays and push to extend these bans from 25 to 50 years.

He also wants to pass a municipal-wide mining moratorium with the help of the town council.

Despite being new to politics, Marin had strong support from local environmental groups and residents. Many people in Sibuyan have long opposed mining operations, saying they threaten the island’s natural beauty and rich biodiversity.

Mayor

Sibuyan is often called the “Galápagos of Asia” because of its unique plants and animals.

Marin’s victory shows the people’s growing concern for the environment and their desire to protect Sibuyan from destructive industries. His leadership is expected to focus on sustainability and community involvement, especially in decisions that affect the island’s future.

As the new mayor takes office, many are hopeful that Sibuyan’s natural treasures will remain safe and protected for the next generations. His victory sends a strong message: people are ready to stand up for nature and support leaders who do the same.
