Marcos Seeks WHO Support to Strengthen Philippines’ Health System

Marcos Requests WHO Assistance to Enhance the Philippines’ Health System

MARCOS – President Marcos is seeking support from the World Health Organization (WHO) to help strengthen and improve the Philippines’ health system in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed a strong commitment to improving the Philippines’ health system in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent meeting with Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) regional director for the Western Pacific, Marcos emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with the global health body to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

During the courtesy call at Malacañang on Friday, President Marcos assured Dr. Piukala that the Philippine government is doing everything it can to enhance its health system following the lessons learned from the pandemic. “I’m sure (Health) Secretary Ted (Herbosa) has explained to you what the Philippines has been trying to do, especially post-pandemic lessons learned. So, whatever guidance that the WHO can provide us is something that we will certainly welcome,” Marcos said, further adding that any guidance from the WHO would be welcomed with open arms.

According to the report, Dr. Piukala, who assumed leadership of the WHO Western Pacific regional office in February 2024, is tasked with working alongside governments and regional partners to improve health outcomes and safeguard populations from emerging health threats.

In line with efforts to boost the country’s health capabilities, the Marcos administration is pushing for the passage of a critical bill aimed at establishing the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP). This institution is envisioned to bolster the country’s capacity to respond swiftly to future health crises and emerging diseases. The bill, which was approved by the House of Representatives in December 2022, is awaiting approval from the Senate.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the urgent need for advanced virology research and development capabilities within the Philippines. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 underscored the necessity of building local expertise and resources to better address global health threats.

As the Philippines continues to navigate post-pandemic challenges, strengthening its health system remains a top priority, with both national and international cooperation playing a pivotal role in ensuring the country’s future preparedness against emerging health crises.
