In an interview, ER Ejercito bared their battle with cancer.
Actor-politician ER Ejercito opens up about the story of his wife Maita Sanchez who fought cancer the past years.
No words of comfort could ever take the pain of a loss by death. Heartbroken is an understatement and while some say we can always move on from this, there’s no getting away with it in reality as the pain remains. One just gets used to living with it and learns to move around it.
A couple of days ago, former Pagsanjan, Laguna Mayor Girlie Javier-Ejercito, known by the stage name Maita Sanchez died. She was the wife of former Laguna Gov. E.R. Ejercito. The latter was the one who made the announcement early Sunday morning. His wife passed away due to endometrial cancer at a Quezon City hospital past midnight. She was 55 and left behind Ejercito and their six children.
About Maita’s battle
She was first diagnosed in 2015 and according to the analysis, it was more related to stress. The stress started in 2014 when he was taken out illegally as the elected governor of Laguna. The breast cancer manifested around 2015 and 2016 and they’ve decided to put her on treatment in 2017.
For a year, they fought and kept her illness a secret. He said, “Kaya one year ko siyang pinagamot sa St. Luke’s nung 2017, naging cancer-free na siya. Gumaling naman, at tuwang-tuwa kami, nakabalik siya bilang mayor ng Pagsanjan.”
She got rid of cancer but in 2022, when she failed in the 2022 elections, the cancer returned because of stress again. The previous type of cancer became stage 4 endometrial cancer and for the years 2023 and 2024, they mostly stayed inside the hospital. In July 2024, she was confined and was not able to get out.
Her condition worsened. Her ovary, uterus, and fallopian tube were removed from her but the aggressive cancer metastasized.
It spread in her intestines and she was miserable before she took her last breath.
“Very painful ang death ni Mayora, but nung November 2, nung gabi, ay naghihingalo na siya, nakapikit. Pinipilit ko siyang gisingin, dahil nakapikit na siya at naghihingalo na,” he said.
Ejercito then added, “Nung dumilat siya nung 11:51 P.M., akala ko okay na siya. Yun pala, last look na niya at last breath. So, she passed away ng 12:01 in the morning on November 3, 2024.”
