KIN – The family members of some deceased buried in a cemetery in Marikina City were shocked to see other remains occupying their loved ones’ tombs.
Countless Filipino people practice the tradition of going to cemeteries on the last days of October and the first days of November every year. Many Filipinos bring flowers, light a candle, and offer prayers for the souls of their deceased loved ones.
November 1 and 2 are part of the holidays in the Philippines not only in 2024 but every year. The people are given the chance to be with their family members and friends to visit the grave and tombs of their departed loved ones and commemorate the life they have lived.
Undeniably, in many cases, a visit to the cemetery brings so much emotion towards many people. Countless individuals could not help but miss their loved ones as they visit their grave and recall the fond memories shared. However, in Barangka Public Cemetery in Marikina City, it was a different scenario for the kin of some deceased buried in the cemtery.
Based on a report on GMA News Online, there were kin of some deceased buried in Barangka Public Cemtery in Marikina City who were shocked by what they saw when they arrived at the cemetery. The found the remains of the other deceased occupying the tombs where their late loved ones’ were buried.
Carmen Antenero was supposed to bring flowers to place it on the tomb of her late husband. However, she did not find the tombstone of her late husband to where it was set by somewhere in the ground.
“Dalawa na nga lang kami ng anak mo dito, ganito pa maabutan namin, wala ka na. Ang sakit sa akin,” Carmen said based on the report.
Beng Penayo had a similar experience with Carmen Antenero. Based on the report, until now, she could not find the remains of her parents and she is hopeful to find their remains so they can be transferred to a tomb where their family can visit.
Based on the report, Antenero and Penayo are just some of the kin of the deceased buried in Barangka Public Cemetery in Marikina City who complain about the exhumation of their deceased family members at the cemetery.
The exhumation was conducted under an ordinance stating that the remains of the deceased can only stay in the cemetery for five (5) years. However, based on the report, the Marikina City Hall made a clarification that a moratorium allegedly placed the ordinance on pause thus, the exhumation was illegal.
Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro believes that there were some people with ill intenstions who opened the tombs and offered those tombs to others for a fee. Reportedly, the data showed that 63 remains were exhumed. Currently, there is a huge challenge of identifying the remains that were reportedly placed in a bag with details.
