EARTHQUAKE: 4.0 Magnitude Quake Jolts Ilocos Sur

Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Ilocos Sur, January 16, 2024

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.0 magnitude quake in Ilocos Sur today, Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake that hit Ilocos Sur today had a magnitude of 4.0.

The earthquake today that struck Ilocos Sur, Tuesday, January 16, 2023, was tectonic in origin.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Ilocos Sur was located at 17.25°North, 119.92°East – 058 km South 87° West of Santiago. It had a depth of focus of 011 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, no intensity was recorded at the epicenter of the quake as well as the nearby areas. The following instrumental intensities were recorded of the said quake:

    • Candon, Ilocos Sur
  • Intensity II
    • Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
