Man Earns Criticisms for Tearing OFW Wife’s Passport & Plane Ticket at NAIA
A man was arrested at NAIA for tearing his OFW wife’s passport and plane ticket to prevent her from working abroad.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) Aviation Security Group arrested a 34-year-old man identified as Jonard Banate, who tore apart his departing wife’s passport at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1.
The 31-year-old victim, identified as Myren Detaro Onato, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), was found in tears after Banate damaged her passport.
The authorities intervened as they witnessed the emotional scene, with Onato upset over the torn passport. The suspect also smashed the OFW’s cell phone and tore her boarding pass aside from tearing the passport.
“Nagpalag ako. E, hinila niya ako. E, bigla na lang niya kinuha ang cellphone ko, tapos binato niya. Sunod yung passport ko. Pinunit niya yung front page ng passport ko, tapos ticket ko,” Myren said.
Onato was scheduled for a flight to Kuwait that afternoon to return to her job after a vacation in the Philippines. The incident happened when she was about to board her flight.
The victim revealed that she often experiences physical abuse from her husband when he is drunk, attributing it to jealousy.
Authorities assisted the OFW, ensuring she could retrieve her checked-in luggage. The immediate action by the Aviation Security Group aims to provide support to victims of such incidents, especially when they involve travel documents and potential threats to safety.
Myra filed a case against Jonard for violating Republic Act 9262 or Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children, physical injury as well as for defying the Philippine Passport Act.
Meanwhile, Jonard declined to provide a statement regarding the incident.
