Security Guard Lost His Life After Shot by Fellow Guard in Caloocan City

CALOOCAN CITY – A security guard lost his life in the line of duty, shot by a fellow security personnel due to an altercation.

The 48-year-old victim identified as Joel Moreno was fatally wounded in an altercation with his 34-year-old colleague, Romnick Perote. The incident happened in a subdivision in Bagombong, North Caloocan around 8:00 pm on Sunday evening (October 1, 2023).

At that time, Moreno was on duty, while Perote had just finished his shift and was off duty. Witnesses on the scene reported that the suspect had consumed alcohol and decided to visit the guardhouse for a cup of coffee.

The security guard confronted his colleague and informed him that off-duty personnel were not allowed to linger in the guardhouse. This led to an altercation between the two, during which the victim struck the suspect with a broomstick.

Perote retaliated by retrieving a firearm that was stored in the guardhouse. Despite efforts by a bystander to intervene and break up the altercation, Perote fired the gun multiple times at Moreno.

Moreno sustained gunshot wounds in various parts of his body, resulting in his death. The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by the Caloocan Police in the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) as he attempted to escape to Novaliches.

The suspect was found in possession of a loaded firearm. The latter admitted the crime and expressed remorse for his actions. He was immediately turned over to the Caloocan Police and will face charges of murder.

QCPD will also file charges against the security personnel for violating the gun ban in accordance with the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act in relation to the Omnibus Election Code.
