EJ Obiena, Margielyn Didal Named Philippine Flag Bearers in Asian Games
Two of the country’s best athletes EJ Obiena and Margielyn Didal will carry the Philippine’s flag in the 19th Asian Games in China.
Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham Tolentino announced that the two Olympians will serve as flag bearers and lead a delegation of 395 individuals to Hangzhou, China. This announcement was made at the Philippine International Convention Center as the athletes departed for the Asian Games.
The Philippine team received an enthusiastic send-off, fostering excitement and mutual support among national athletes. Didal, known for her prowess in skateboarding, was one of the Philippines’ four gold medalists in the 2018 Asian Games.
On the other hand, Obiena, a pole vaulter, secured a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August and still holds the Asian record in the sport, clearing 6.00 meters. The Asian Games in Hangzhou will feature nearly 500 competitors, including para-athletes.
Local sports officials are optimistic that the Philippines can match, if not exceed, the four gold medals they achieved in Indonesia in 2018. Among those participating, tennis star Alex Eala and Olympic boxing medalists Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial will be prominent contenders, based on the article of CNN PH.
Paalam emphasized the tough nature of the competition, underscoring its significance as a means of Olympic qualification. Winning is an absolute necessity. On the other hand, Marcial mentioned that they are in the process of adapting to their new weight classes due to shifts in weight divisions. However, they have successfully completed their training and are fully prepared for the upcoming battles.
