3 Zamboanga City Cops Relieved from Post After Waiter Died in Custody
Three (3) cops in Zamboanga City were relieved from their post after a waiter they escorted allegedly died.
According to Zamboanga City Police Chief Col. Alexander Lorenzo, three officers have been dismissed of their duties following the death of a waiter in their custody. The Philippine National Police’s Regional Internal Affairs Service (RIAS) and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) are looking into the three policemen.
Lorenzo said RIAS got a copy of the autopsy report on the body of Reynaldo Paragas Jr., a waiter who died while being escorted by police. Paragas was allegedly escorted following a confrontation with a retired police major at the pub where he was working.
The RIAS is now investigating the victim’s bruises and injuries, as well as the autopsy results on his corpse. Until then, the only evidence available was video from a CCTV camera in the restaurant, which is located in a secluded barangay in Zamboanga City. Lorenzo elaborated.
According to the report of ABS-CBN News, the event arose from a brawl between Paragas and a retired police major named only “Cuartocruz.” Lorenzo stated that Cuartocruz, a stroke victim, was continuously asking Paragas to provide him with alcohol.
His fellow retired officer and his son both urged him against it. Cuartocruz’s requests were rebuffed by Paragas, resulting in a heated dispute that allegedly evolved into a fistfight.
Officers told the victim’s family that he died after jumping out of a police car following the brawl. However, according to Paragas’ relative “Cecilia,” who cited a doctor, the victim’s head injuries suggest that he was hit by a “hard object.”
“Cecilia” went on to say that when Cuartocruz found out Paragas was dead, he immediately went to where the waiter’s bones were discovered and yelled, “buti nga sa iyo” (you get what you deserve). Lorenzo stated that the three police officers were already in administrative detention of the PNP while the inquiry into Paragas’ death was proceeding.
