Former Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo No Longer the House Senior Deputy Speaker
GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO – The former President and currently the Pampanga 2nd District Representative reacted to being replaced as the House Senior Deputy Speaker.
After her 10-year stint as the Philippine president from 2001 to 2010, Arroyo continued to be present in the political arena. She is currently the Congresswoman of the 2nd District of Pampanga and also holds a position in the House of Representatives.
Former Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was the Senior Deputy Speaker of the House until recently when her colleague elected a new lawmaker for the position. Deputy Majority Leader Iloilo 3rd District Representative Lorenz Defensor moved to elect Pampanga 3rd District Representative Aurelio Dong Gonzales Jr. to the position.
The House of Representatives approved the motion. After Gonzales was elected as the new Senior Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Defensor moved to elect Pampanga 2nd District Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as Deputy Speaker, the position vacated by the new Senior Deputy Speaker of the lower chamber of the legislative body.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, House Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe said in a text message that the “House of Representatives has elected Deputy Speaker Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. as Senior Deputy Speaker to unburden his cabalen, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, of the heavy load required from the position”.
As for the side of Cong. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is now the Deputy Speaker of the House, the decision was “the prerogative of the House”. According to the report, her statement was released in a press release of her office.
