17-Year-Old Boy Asks Help From Barangay Officials Since He Could No Longer Feed His Younger Siblings After His Mom Abandoned Them

A 17-year-old boy from Barangay Tabok, Mandaue City sought the help of barangay officials after his mother allegedly abandoned him and his siblings for two months.

The young boy claimed that he could no longer take care of and provide for the basic needs of his five-year-old sister and one-year-old brother. The teenager admits that he needs assistance.

According to the teenager, he and his sibling were left in their mother’s custody after his dad was arrested for drug-related charges and sent to jail in 2021. The teenager had to stop attending school to take care of his younger siblings.

At first, his mother would only be gone for three days a week, but she had been missing for two months leaving them with nothing.

The teenager said that some relatives had tried to help them, but they could only do so much as they also had their families to attend to. As a result, he sought the assistance of barangay officials from Barangay Tabok, Mandaue City.

The official coordinated with the City Social Welfare Services (CSWS). Upon receiving the report, CSWS personnel provide the children with food and groceries. They also assessed the situation and planned to provide the children with further assistance.

Abandonment of children is considered a crime in the Philippines, and parents who abandon their children can face penalties such as imprisonment and fines.

The government has various programs that provide support and assistance to children in need, such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and the Comprehensive Program for Street Children.
