Crazy Rich Asians: Philippines Eyed As Next Location For The Hollywood Blockbuster

Philippines Eyed As Next Location For ‘Crazy Rich Asians’

CRAZY RICH ASIANS – According to author Kevin Kwan, a follow-up to 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians will take place in the Philippines.

Crazy Rich Asians swept the box office in 2018 and won over audiences’ hearts. The movie broke box office records, earned millions internationally, and emerged as the most popular rom-com in ten years. It also paved the way for more diversified representation in Hollywood because of its largely Asian actor roster.

Based on the Kevin Kwan novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians tells the story of Rachel Chu, a professor who is Asian American and is played by Constance Wu. She travels to Singapore with her lover, Nick Young (Henry Golding), for the wedding of his closest friend, and discovers that Nick is a member of one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh are also featured in the movie.

Last year, Kapuso actress Heart Evangelista revealed that Kevin Kwan wanted her to audition for Crazy Rich Asians. She shared it in her “Heartworld” Youtube vlog.

Based on a report from Inquirer, the novelist said the Philippines will serve as the next location for Crazy Rich Asians’ sequel. The author expressed his love for the archipelago during a trip to the nation for the World Travel & Tourism Council Global Summit last year, as well as his ambition to set a movie here.

“It’s a country with so many amazing locations, cultures, flavors, and of course, people. This is my fourth trip [here] and it’s always a pleasure to be back. It’s always surprising—I never know what will happen, but it’s always a grand adventure,” Kevin shared.

Producer of movies Lawrence Bender concurred with him, saying, “[Kevin] wrote a script, and it’s like a love letter to the Philippines.”

The revelation led to speculation that the reported movie’s sequel starring Astrid (Gemma Chan) and Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.) will in fact be set in the Philippines. For those who don’t know, Astrid was engaged to Wu until her parents stepped in and convinced her to stay with Michael because of his history. However, she found out that Michael was unfaithful in the 2018 movie; she also bumps into Wu in the mid-credits sequence, hinting at a reconciliation.

The Philippines, however, is only mentioned and used as a setting in the 3rd and last book in the series, Rich People Problems, unless they are not carefully adhering to the source material. The potential spin-off might even take place in the past, exploring the couple’s bond before they were forcibly split apart. Therefore, there is a great probability that the Philippines will appear in the Crazy Rich Asians universe. However, this won’t happen anytime soon because we must first finish the spin-off and the sequel, China Rich Girlfriend. If they adhere to the books, that is.
