Tourism Officer Says Hundreds Of Tourists Cancel Vacations In Puerto Galera

PUERTO GALERA – Here’s the reason why hundreds of tourists cancel vacations in Puerto Galera.

From Manila, Puerto Galera is a short trip that attracts many beach and environment enthusiasts. This is the ideal destination in the Philippines if you like to go diving, hike through the jungle, explore waterfalls, or spend time at the beach.

The seaside town was designated as a Man and Biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1973, in addition to its pure white sand beaches and crystal clear blue water.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN, tourist bookings in Puerto Galera have been canceled one after the other after Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Dolor announced that the water in the area failed the water quality test, an official said this Tuesday.

According to Mary Christine Ibon, senior tourism officer of Puerto Galera, more than 500 tourists have already canceled so the local government unit (LGU) of the town continues to clarify that their area remains oil spill-free.

According to the LGU, if the cancellations continue, around 11,000 tourism workers will be affected while P5.5 million per day will be lost in tourism income. Humerlito Dolor earlier said that Puerto Galera and other nearby areas have failed 4 consecutive water tests, so swimming and other water activities there are not safe.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) continues to gather information to find out how the plastic and drummed oil ended up on the beach in Puerto Galera. According to the PCG substation in Puerto Galera, they cannot yet say if it was intended to be placed there.

Based on the report, the Coast Guard received the report about the oil found on Monday morning. According to German Madeja, chief of Bantay Dagat PuertoGalera, plastic containing 20 liters of black oil was first found floating on Haligue Beach in Barangay Santo Niño.

Subsequently, the Coast Guard also found a drum filled with 210 liters of oil at Sapangan Beach, Barangay San Antonio. According to the fishermen, they found 3 more drums floating and are now searching for them. The members of the Coast Guard are helping each other to find another drum of oil. The Coast Guard is worried that it might spread and damage the sea, which they rely on for their livelihood.
