Pinay OFW Expreses Dismay After Souvenir Toy For Child Destroyed at NAIA
The Pinay OFW’s souvenir toy for her child was destroyed at NAIA due to suspicion of contraband.
An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) named Rachell Anne Ramos experienced a distressing situation at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) when the souvenir toy she brought for her child was destroyed by Bureau of Customs (BOC) personnel due to suspicion of contraband.
Ramos had just arrived from Hong Kong and had a connecting flight to Laoag, Ilocos Norte when she was approached by a BOC personnel. The personnel claimed that they had seen something suspicious in her baggage, and so her baggage was subjected to x-ray scanning twice and was also sniffed by a K-9 unit or dog.

Despite not finding any illegal item in her baggage, the BOC personnel still had doubts and insisted on checking the souvenir toy she brought for her child. In an effort to prove her innocence and avoid being left behind by her flight, Ramos decided to have the toy destroyed to clear her name.
“Akala nila may droga nga o something inside so doon na ako nagtaka,” Ramos said.
A photo of the incident shows an airport personnel holding the toy and smashing it on the ground. According to Ramos, the toy was completely destroyed and was thrown in the trash.
In response to the incident, Ramos suggested that the BOC upgrade their machines at the airport to clearly see the contents of the baggage to prevent a similar incident from happening to others.
She also expressed her disappointment in the BOC’s actions, as the destruction of the toy not only caused her emotional distress but also took away a special gift for her child.
Atty. Vincent Maronilla, assistant commissioner and spokesperson of the BOC, later apologized to Ramos for what happened to her toy. He also stated that they would try to follow her suggestion to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
