Negros Oriental Police Chief Relieved from Post Weeks After Degamo Slay

Negros Oriental police chief has been relieved of his post effective March 22 weeks after the death of Governor Roel Degamo.

Col Reynaldo Lizardo was fired as the police director of Negros Oriental. This occurred three weeks after the killing of Gov. Roel Degamo, which left eight people dead and 17 injured at the governor’s residential compound in Pamplona.

His relief was part of the continuing probe into Governor Degamo’s death. According to Lizardo, he obtained a copy of the relief order on Thursday and promptly had an exit meeting with the police chiefs and other unit commanders. His new assignment was not revealed right away.

“This is an administrative process within the organization where a commander is relieved of his or her current position to give way to an impartial investigation,” Lizardo said, based on the article of PNA.

Brig. General Jerry Bearis, Director of Police Regional Office 7 (Central Visayas), was also fired last week as the national headquarters ordered a comprehensive overhaul following the incident in which police personnel previously or presently assigned to the province are being linked to the mass massacre. According to Lt. Col. Kym Lopez, spokeswoman for the Negros Oriental police, Col. Alex Guce Recinto will take Lizardo’s post.

According to Lopez, the leadership transition will begin this Friday. It was not stated where Lizardo would be assigned or why he was relieved of his duties. In November 2022, he was appointed to the province.
