Divorce Bill Philippines: House Panel Approves Divorce Bill

House panel OKs divorce bill in the Philippines.

DIVORCE BILL PHILIPPINES – House Committee on Population and Family relations approved the divorce bill according to Rep. Edcel Lagman.

Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lagman said that the House Committee on Population and Family relations gives approval to a bill reinstituting absolute divorce in the Philippines.

To recall, last February 2023, a panel of the House of Representatives approved bills on divorce in principle and they are subject to consolidation. Lagman’s motion for approval for House Bill nos. 78, 1021, 1593, 2593, 3843, 3885, 4957, and 4998 was backed by other representatives.

And just recently, the Committee on Population and Family Relations finally OKs the divorce bill.

Lagman expressed that the nod is giving spouses and wives hope to get out of “irremediably broken marriage”. His House Bill No. 78 is a replica of the bill that was approved during the 17th Congress for a third and final reading.

He believes that this bill will only not give them get out of marriages no longer working but also of marriages where abuse exists. This is their chance to get a new chance in life and start over again.

In the proposed Absolute Divorce Act based on the report from ABS-CBN, one of the salient features stated that “quickie, notarial, email and other speedy drive-thru divorces are prohibited”.

After the filing of the divorce, the couple will be given sixty (60) days or a cooling-off period. This period will be used for their possible reconciliation. If the parties are to reconcile, the filed divorce will be nullified.

Another point is that the law is accordingly “not against the Catholic faith”. The bible cited several instances of divorce. The Papacy has also not condemned this and the Philippines remained to be a Catholic country in the cluster to not legalize divorce yet.
