Armed Suspect Uses Ambulance to Stage Crime Against Food Vendor

An armed suspect reportedly used an ambulance to attack a food vendor along Sarimanok Road in Marawi City.

A town ambulance was used as part of the crime by the suspect in a shooting attack in Marawi City. The ambulance was seen parking on the side of the road before the driver, identified as Ansary Marohombsar, a former municipal councilor, shot a man standing nearby.  The gunman escaped, leaving the victim behind.

The ambulance’s insignia allowed authorities to trace it down and learn that it was owned by the Ganassi town, according to Marawi city police chief Lieutenant Colonel Gieson Baniaga.

“Allegedly ‘yung  suspek is  team leader ng Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) ng Gannasi municipality kaya may access talaga siya sa ambulansya,” Baniaga said.

According to Police Major Alvison Mustapha, the spokesperson of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office, the suspect may have chosen to use an ambulance because it would not be flagged down by authorities.

“Ang ambulansya alam naman natin na hindi pwedeng i-[flag] down eh, hindi pwedeng iharang sa checkpoint… inanticipate niya na magagawa niya sa pagtakas ito ginamit niya,” Mustapha said quoted by GMA.

The shooting victim identified as Joseph Alindo Saragena, was not the intended target of the suspect. Instead, the investigation showed that the gunman was aiming for the person standing beside Saragena.

The ambulance, which was turned over by the municipal government, is now in police custody after allegedly being abandoned by the suspect. The investigation is still underway, and the suspect is still on the loose.

The use of a town ambulance as a getaway vehicle in a crime has raised concerns about the safety and security of emergency vehicles.
