DOTr Says Subsidy for Modern Jeepneys to be Increased this 2023

SUBSIDY FOR MODERN JEEPNEYS – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the subsidy will be raised to P260,000.00.

One of the national issues in the Philippines now which has garnered different reactions from the people is about the modernization of jeepneys in the country. Under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, jeepneys, buses, and public utility vehicles (PUVs) that are at least 15 years old will be phased-out.

The said modernization program aims to make the transportation system in the Philippines efficient and environment friendly. There are requirements with regards to the new vehicles that will be secured.

Meanwhile, jeepney drivers who will obtain new modern jeepneys can expect a subsidy from the national government. Under the DOTr program, each driver will get P160,000.00. Meanwhile, the agency decided to raise the amount this year.

Based on a report on GMA News, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) recently announced that the subsidy for modern jeepneys will be raised from Php 160,000.00 to Php 260,000.00 this 2023. They will get the said amount as an aid on top of the value of their old vehicle.

DOTr Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor said that the continuous increase of the prices of petroleum products as well as basic needs of the people are the reasons behind the raise of the subsidy for modern jeepney drivers. Based on the report, the government agency aims to implement the raise in the second quarter of 2023.

There are several modern jeepneys in the Philippines now. However, this week, there is a transport strike held by drivers who are against the modernization program. Many of them are on the streets calling for the government to drop the program citing their situations in life. Several jeepney drivers also stressed that their vehicles still work.
