Ninoy Aquino and Cory Aquino are remembered during the celebration of the EDSA people power
Political science lecturer Francis Joseph “Kiko” Aquino Dee, the grandson of the late Ninoy Aquino and Cory Aquino, stressed that the EDSA legacies must be strengthened.
From February 22 to 25, 1986, Filipinos gathered along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to show that they wanted to oust former President Ferdinand Marcos after he declared Martial Law and remained in his position for more than two decades.
After almost four decades, Ninoy and Cory’s grandson said that Filipinos should continue doing the legacies of the people power revolution, based on the article in One News PH.
Dee said in an interview that at present, most people are forgetting the respect for human rights and freedom of speech. He added that the Philippines is leading non-democratic direction despite the EDSA revolution.
“Pero ano ‘yung mga institution, ano ‘yung mga values natin na nagpapalakas, nag-guarantee na hindi mawawala ‘yung ganyang freedom? ‘Yung pagpapahalaga sa dignidad ng mga tao, pagpapahalaga sa mga buhay. Kumbaga ginagalang natin ‘yung mga kapwa natin kahit iba ‘yung opinyon nila, kahit naiiba ‘yung opinyon ng minority sa majority, dinidinig pa din, nirerespeto pa din,” the grandson of Cory and Ninoy Aquino said.
Dee also stressed the importance of valuing other people’s lives and stressed that killings should be stopped. Respect for the minority’s opinion should be exercised as well, he said.
“Kahit na nag–di-disagree tayo, kahit ‘yung majority, 50 percent plus, 59 percent plus, kung gaano man kalaki man ‘yung majority na ‘yan, hindi ibig sabihin na ‘yun lang ‘yung tamang opinyon, o ‘yun lang ‘yung dapat masunod,” Dee said.
On February 3, the musical movie Ako Si Ninoy was released in cinemas. It is directed by Vince Tanada and JK Labajo portrayed the character of Ninoy Aquino.
