BOC Seized P150-M Worth of Smuggled Onion, and Garlic in Metro Manila

Personnel of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized P150 million worth of smuggled onion and garlic in Metro Manila.

According to the BOC’s Facebook post, officials recently confiscated an estimated P150 million in contraband agricultural items in separate searches in Metro Manila. According to BOC, officials from several government agencies raided 24 warehouses.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service-Manila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP), the Philippine National Police-Crime Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), and the Philippine Coast Guard carried out the operation. in Metro Manila (PCG). In 24 warehouses and storage facilities, hundreds of thousands of tons of onions and garlic worth $150 million were uncovered.

“Corresponding seizure and forfeiture proceedings will be conducted against the subject shipments for violation of Sec. 1400 (misdeclaration in goods declaration) in relation to Sec. 1113 (property subject to seizure and forfeiture) of Republic Act No. 10863 known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) and Republic Act 10845 or the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016,” according to the BOC.

“The case records will also be forwarded to the Bureau’s Action Team Against Smugglers (BATAS) for the filing of appropriate charges and criminal cases against those responsible for the illegal importation of the said agricultural products,” the agency added.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) uncovered PHP90 million in contraband sugar and cigarettes at the Manila International Container Port (MICP). According to the BOC, the containers, which arrived between January 5, 2023 and February 12, 2023, contained an estimated PHP90,442,850 in smuggled commodities.
