The entertainment industry mourns the death of renowned writer Lualhati Bautista
Award-winning writer and activist Lualhati Bautista dies at the age of 77 on Sunday, February 12, 2023.
The entertainment industry is mourning after reports were released saying that Bautista has passed away. She is known as the novelist behind acclaimed works like “Bata, Bata…Pa’no Ka Ginawa?”, “Dekada ‘70” and “Gapo.” These were portrayed on the big screen.

Bautista was also known for writing the screenplay of the film “Bulaklak sa City Jail,” starring Nora Aunor, which won best story and best screenplay at the Metro Manila Film Festival in 1984, based on the report from Inquirer.
During her active years, she served as vice president of the Screenwriters Guild of the Philippines and as chair of the Kapisanan ng mga Manunulat ng Nobelang Popular.
Bautista was also considered a national fellow for fiction by the University of the Philippines (UP) Creative Writing Center in 1986. She also received the Diwata Award for best writer at the 16th International Women’s Film Festival of the UP Film Center.
Aside from being an acclaimed writer, Lualhati Bautista was also an activist. She is known for bravely criticizing the social and political system.
On Sunday, another “alagad ng sining” bid goodbye. Bautista’s first cousins, Maria Rosario and Sonny Ross Samonte, shared this sad news. “Sad News for our Torres Clan, Our first cousin Lualhati Bautista died at 77 yrs old this morning,” the post stated.
“I, together with my siblings are deeeply saddened by her passing. Rest in paradise Lualhati or Ne as we used to call her,” Maria Rosario wrote.
