Founders of Din Tai Fung Yang Bingyi and his wife Lai Penmei launched this brand as a cooking oil retailer in 1958. However, in 1970, a huge decline in the cooking oil business was met. They decided to make half of their company sell steamed buns which were well-received by many people.
In 1972, the cooking oil business closed down but born a full-fledged restaurant. It received good responses from customers, so it expanded. They opened their first international store in Tokyo in 1996. In 2005, it was able to establish a place in Jakarta.
Currently, this restaurant has branches in countries like Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, UAE, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, the UK, and the USA.
In the Philippines, it has spread to five restaurants.
