PH Pole Vaulter EJ Obiena Wins Gold Medal in Perche En Or in France
Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena bagged a gold medal for the Philippines in Perche En Or in France.
EJ Obiena of the Philippines brought honor to the country once more after capturing the gold medal in the Perche En Or in Roubaix, France on Sunday. This is Obiena’s first gold medal in the aforementioned international elite indoor pole vault championship.
Obiena defeated Yao Jie (China) in the first attempt after clearing 5.82 meters. As a result, Yao only received a silver medal after jumping 5.75 meters. The bronze medal went to Ethan Cormont of France, based on the report of GMA News.
Obiena will also compete in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Kazakhstan next month. The Orlen Copernicus Cup in Torun, Poland on Feb. 8 and the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Lievin, France on Feb. 15 are two indoor meetings in which the 27-year-old Obiena could compete.
All of these tournaments, including the World Indoor Tour Madrid on Feb. 22, have been scheduled as part of the 2023 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold. Obiena began his indoor season with a silver medal at the International Jump Meeting Cottbus in Germany on January 26. Obiena’s indoor pole vault record is 5.91 meters.
