Ex-PDEA Official Surrendered After Accused of Protector of Drug Lords Surrendered

Former Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (Ex-PDEA) official allegedly protector of drug lords surrendered to the authorities.

According to the report, the official was a former PDEA regional director and used as a protector for drug suspects. After receiving death threats, former PDEA-National Capital Region (NCR) chief Erwin Ogario surrendered to the office of Philippine National Police (PNP) regional director Brigadier General Rommel Francisco Marbil.

“He showed up since he has been getting death threats. We just found out that he has a warrant of arrest issued by a court in Quezon City. His voluntary surrender manifests his trust and confidence in our system and leadership,” Marbil told reporters.

After reviewing the arrest warrant, Marbil handcuffed Ogario. He would be transported to the Quezon City court following the booking formalities. Ogario is facing charges of ‘dangerous drug importation,’ a breach of Section 4, Article II of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

On January 3, 2019, Judge Elvira Panganiban of Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 227 issued an arrest warrant for Ogario. According to Marbil, Ogario simply stayed with his family in Eastern Samar.

Marbil and Ogario met in 2014 and 2015 when the latter was the PDEA Region 13 director and the former was the provincial head of the Agusan del Norte PNP. Based on the report, Ogario was the PDEA regional director of NCR when he was fired in 2017 after being discovered protecting drug suspects.

He is charged with ‘obstruction of justice’ for allowing the accused drug importer to be released so quickly after accepting the shipment carrying 1,358 ecstasy tablets at the Pasay City post office on June 29, 2015, without filing criminal charges against the suspect.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte designated Ogario as one of the PDEA officers who accept bribes from detained drug personalities in order to expedite their release from prison and dismissal of the cases filed against them in 2021.
