MMDA to Establish Motorcycle Riding Academy in Manila

MMDA Will Make Motorcycle Riding Academy to Prevent Accidents

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will establish a motorcycle riding academy in Manila.

The MMDA stated on Monday that it will establish a Motorcycle Riding Academy in order to reduce motorcycle accidents. According to MMDA interim chairman Atty. Don Artes, the Academy will provide motorcyclists with official instruction in both theoretical and practical areas of motorcycle riding.

A technical working group will be formed to develop a riding academy training course module. According to the MMDA, both novice and experienced riders will benefit from the module, where they will be instructed and provided with basic knowledge such as different types, basic parts, basic control, and the operation of motorbikes.

They will also be taught various road safety laws, rules, and regulations for motorcycle operation; vital driving skills for avoiding risky circumstances; and risk awareness and risk-taking. It will also give motorbike riders basic emergency response training.

“Through this Motorcycle Riding Academy, we aim to further promote road safety, particularly to our motorcyclists who are very much at risk of road mishaps,” said Artes.

“It’s a good opportunity for them to refresh and hone their riding skills and to provide first aid to people who will encounter unexpected road accidents.”

Based on the report, participants in the program are not required to pay anything. In addition, upon completion of the lectures, practical application, and Basic Emergency Response Course, students will be awarded certificates.

The academy is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2023. According to the MMDA Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS), motorcycle riders accounted for nearly 38% of all road crash fatalities in 2018, accounting for 224 fatalities out of a total of 590.
