He cited his declining mental and physical health then as the main reasons for stepping down. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, since then, the Pope Emeritus lived a quiet life in what used to be a convent inside Vatican City.

According to the report, the Vatican said that the health of the former Pope has worsened “in the last few hours” and his advancing age was cited as a factor in the deterioration of his health. In a statement, the Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said that his condition is currently under control and the doctors are monitoring him.

Pope Francis visited Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI after his general audience at the Vatican. Two (2) years ago, in 2020, Maltese Cardinal Mario Grech revealed that the Pope Emeritus was facing a difficulty in speaking.
