Transwoman Barred by Mall Employee to Use Ladies’ Restroom

Transwoman Air Dismay to Mall Employee who Barred Her from Using Ladies’ Restroom

A disappointed transwoman airs dismay to a mall employee who allegedly barred her from using the ladies’ restroom.

Transwoman Jaymie Cario, who claims she was prohibited from accessing the female comfort room at a mall in Quezon City, vented her fury on Facebook. She claimed that a mall employee stopped her as she approached the restroom.

“I was prohibited to enter a woman’s restroom because they said my existence as a transwoman entering that restroom is out of respect. When I ask him po why I’m not allowed to enter the restroom he said that ‘respeto’ and I asked who said that [then] he just kept saying ‘ayun po ang sabi,'” Jaymie said.

According to her post, the mall employee advised her to use the comfort room for PWDs instead of telling the man to call his supervisor. She eventually used the comfort room for PWD because of the urge to urinate.

“Hindi [na]tawag [ni kuya] ang supervisor dahil wala daw, so sabi niya sakin sa PWD nalang daw ako umihi and I told him na ‘may disability ba ako?’ and hindi sya nakapagsalita and ihing ihi na talaga ko kaya pinush ko nalang umihi sa PWD,” he said.

She claims that this is not the only instance of discrimination she has encountered. As members of the LGBTQIA+ community, she demanded that they be treated equally. Jaymie regrets that the SOGIE Bill can be protected and promoted for everyone, not only the LGBTQIA+ community.

“I hope maging pantay po ang pagtingin natin sa isa’t isa. Ang gusto lamang din po naming mga miyembro ng trans community is to use the restroom where we identify ourselves with. All we want is to relieve ourselves without fear, hesitation, and shame. Sana maging aral po itong mga nangyayari samin para maisulong na rin po yung SOGIE Bill at maprotektahan hindi lamang po kaming part ng LGBTQIA+ community, pero para sa lahat na rin po,” she added.
