BENEFITS OF SIM CARD REGISTRATION ACT – SIM card users in the Philippines are now required to register following the passage of a bill to a law.

President Bongbong Marcos signed the SIM Card Registration Act, the first bill he signed into law as the country’s Chief Executive. It will require the SIM card users to register using a valid document with photo. With regards to the benefits or effects of making the registration mandatory, based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Manila Bulletin Tech Editor Art Samaniego Jr. said that the mandatory registration may not be able to stop the scamming and spamming incidents but it can reduce the problem. Furthermore, he stressed that there can be a lead if it happens.

Based on the report, Samaniego expressed that 784 million blocked text scams are prepaid SIMs. Yugatech found and editor-in-chief Abe Olandres said that reducing the number of subscribers will also reduce the number of text scams scattering. According to Samaniego, telecommunication companies are given enough time by the DICT to prepare for the SIM card registration.

The advancement in technology has led to mobile phones being one of the things that many people own. In most cases, it is even considered a necessity at home, at work, and in school. It serves the primary purposes of communication, information, and entertainment now.

Philippines is considered the texting capital in the world. The usage of mobile phones require sim cards for call and text purposes and as well as data or internet connections. In the country, there are several telecommunication giants such as Globe, Smart, and DITO.

Amid the massive use of mobile phones in the country, there are also those who used it in ill purposes like fooling others through scams for money. This is one of the reasons behind the push for mandatory sim card registration in the Congress.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the bill seeking for mandatory sim card registration directs telecommunication providers or sim direct sellers for a valid identification document with photo from the user of the sim. It also directs the telcos to release the information in the SIM in case the court will request for it.

Furthermore, law enforcement agencies may also request for information of certain SIM users from the telco providers. According to the report, the said bill gained the support of several telco giants including Globe, PLDT, and DITO.

However, some internet advocacy groups disapprove the bill saying that it may violate the privacy of the user. Reportedly, a similar bill was pushed under the previous administration but it was vetoed by then President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
