In Tondo, Manila, PNP members recently discovered 990 kg of illicit drugs valued at P6.7 billion. According to the article in Inquirer, the authorities also found an active police officer’s identification, possessions, and “incriminating documents.”
The officer was a member of the PNP’s Drug Enforcement Group (DEG), a police organization specifically responsible for organizing the nation’s anti-drug campaign. According to Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr., this is the country’s biggest drug bust.
“This afternoon will be historic in our country; this is probably the biggest drug haul in the history of the Philippines,” said Abalos in a press briefing on Sunday.
“Ito na siguro ang pinakamalaking paghuhuli ng droga sa kasaysayan ng ating bansa. Halos isang toneladang droga, 990 kilograms of shabu, nagkakahalagang about P6.7 billion,” he added.
Director of the PNP Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG), Narciso Domingo, claims that the drugs were found in a building on Jose Abad Santos Street in Barangay 252 in Tondo, Manila, and were discovered during a buy-bust operation. Wealth and Personal Development Loan Inc., a lending firm based in the premises, was simply a front, according to investigators.
The report added, Shabu was stored in plastic bags stacked on top of one another and ready to be distributed to other vendors. Ney Saligumba Atadero, who came up at the buy-bust to sell cocaine, was detained by field officers.
During the arrest, authorities also discovered documents showing that a police officer from PDEG, identified as M/Sgt. Rodolfo Mayo Jr. was an accomplice of his. The police subsequently launched a manhunt, which resulted in the capture of Master Sergeant Rodolfo Mayo Jr.
