This is what President Bongbong Marcos said about the franchise of ABS-CBN.
PRESIDENT BONGBONG MARCOS – ABS-CBN shut down two years ago and with the new president, what can happen now to the franchise?
Last May 2020, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a cease and desist order. This has forced the ABS-CBN to go off-air. And two months after this, the ABS-CBN network officially shut down.
70 lawmakers rejected the franchise renewal bid of the network despite the network already proving that they did not have any violation. When it comes to taxes, the media company also proved that they regularly pay their taxes.
And now, with Bongbong Marcos assuming the presidency, what does he has to say about this?
In an interview with Toni Gonzaga, PBBM addressed this.
PBBM said that the problem regarding the franchise renewal is the violations and some problems the network encountered during the hearing and investigations. And as long as these issues will be resolved, he sees no reason to deny ABS-CBN a franchise.
He added, “Again, my view and my opinion and my position is that so long as all of those issues that were brought up during the hearings and investigations in the House of Representatives have been attended to and have been resolved…”
The president expressed that the company will likely get a franchise and would not block any efforts to give ABS-CBN Corp. a new 25-year legislative franchise as long as the issues will be resolved. He is aware of the politically-inclined issues behind but he, being the new president, will go after the technicalities.
To recall, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte complained repeatedly before about the network and its failure to air his campaign advertisements during the 2016 presidential elections.
Meanwhile, the new president just turned 65 years old. The interview with Gonzaga, one of his biggest supporters, was the first one-on-one interview he granted after assuming the position of the presidency.
