Agriculture USec Blames Farmers over ‘Oversupply’ of Garlic, Cabbage

Agriculture USecs Says Oversupply of Garlic, Cabbage is Farmers Fault

The Department of Agriculture Undersecretary (Usec) Domingo Panganiban blames farmers due to the ‘oversupply’ of garlic and cabbage.

In his radio interview, Panganiban blamed farmers to the market’s excess of garlic and cabbage. According to Panganiban, farmers never even consider if they will be able to sell their crops.

“It has been happening for the last four or five years.

He also reported what is happening currently in Batanes and Benguet where farmers do not even care about whether just to be able to sell their products. Domingo claims that they have come up with a solution to the market’s overabundance of vegetables.

One of them is that they supply alternative crops to farmers that they can sell quickly. In order to free them from the whims of intermediaries, he continued, they are going to provide them with a product that will stand in for the crop they are cultivating this season.

“What we’re going to do is give them a product that will substitute for the crop they are planting for this season so they are not at the mercy of middlemen,” he said.

Recall that the DA stated last month that in order to address the “shortage,” the nation must import garlic from other nations, such as China. Marilou Cayco, the governor of Batanes, claimed that because DA Region 2 had not purchased much garlic from them, there was an excess supply.
