Mela Habijan, Miss Trans Global 2020 Calls Out DepEd After Receiving Reports About Teacher Cutting Male Student’s Long Hair
Miss Trans Global 2020 Mela Habijan has shared the report she received about a teacher who cuts the long hair of a student.
Mela Franco Habijan has shared the reports she received regarding a teacher who cuts the hair of its student inside the classroom. The post circulates online and garnered various reactions from the online community.
In the photo, it can be seen that the teacher is cutting the long hair of a male student in the middle of the class. However, the teacher’s face has been covered because the post is not meant to embarrass the educators.
Habijan reached out to her friend working at the Department of Education to consult the issue. She asked her friend if the teacher violates Child Protection Policy (DO 40 s2012) by cutting the student’s hair.
According to Mela’s friend, the teacher allegedly violated the Child Protection Policy for overstepping the bounds of decency and subjecting the learner to ridicule although it was done as a punishment.
The Filipina transgender woman just wanted to remind the teachers of their purpose to protect the students.
Here is the full post:
“We got tagged in a Tiktok post, in which a teacher cuts the hair of their student — inside the classroom and witnessed by the entire class.
So, we reached out to one of our friends from DepEd Philippines, if this violates Child Protection Policy (DO 40 s2012), to which they replied:
“Granting that this was done as a punishment, its considered a violation po of the CPP. Parang naoverstep na ng teacher ung bounds of decency and subjecting the learner to ridicule. It may be both considered as physical and psychological abuse po.”
We hid the face of the teacher because this post is not meant to embarass them. Rather, we are reminding teachers of their purpose to protect the kids. More importantly, we need to be reminded that a person’s gender expression (through hair for this matter) must be seen as a personal choice and a reinforcement of one’s identity that builds his/her/their confidence.
Education must have a safe, gender-sensitive, and motivating environment. Education is best practiced when it is inclusive.”
