300 Inmates Are Set to be Freed on President Marcos Birthday

300 Inmates Will Be Release During the 65th Birthday of President Marcos

The Department of Justice (DOJ) said that they will release 300 inmates on the birthday of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

The DOJ stated on Tuesday that they would present a list of 300 people who are currently incarcerated (PDLs) to Malacañang as potential candidates for executive clemency for President Marcos’ upcoming 65th birthday on September 13. The Board of Pardons and Parole will provide a list of PDLs that should be considered for release.

According to DOJ spokesperson Mico Clavano, the decision on who would receive executed clemency is entirely up to the OP (Office of the President) and the OES (Office of the Executive Secretary). The official added that traditionally, they used to do this every Christmas.

On Marcos’ birthday this year, though, they will submit the list, at least for this administration. Based on the report, a PDL will be automatically freed if they have completed their sentence under the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) clause.

The Supreme Court (SC) has ruled that inmates who have completed their sentences for incarceration must be released immediately, even in the absence of court-issued release orders, unless there is another legal reason for keeping them behind bars.

The circular was issued, according to SC Court Administrator Raul B. Villanueva, after numerous government entities “raised concerns over delays” in obtaining court release orders for PDLs who had finished their jail terms and the delays “delayed the release of PDLs from imprisonment.”
