House of the Dragon Ratings Boost as “Rings of Power” Approaches

Most Awaited Episode of HBO’s “House of the Dragon”

House of the Dragon, which debuted on Sunday is a very significant series for the premium cable network and its streaming service HBO Max.

House of the Dragon made its US debut this weekend to almost 10 million people, HBO seemed to have taken the initiative in the highly anticipated TV fantasy epic confrontation with Amazon’s planned “Lord of the Rings” prequel.

It is set in the same Westeros universe as the popular “Game of Thrones” show and is inspired by a medieval period.

According to the report of ABS-CBN, HBO is betting that the prequel to “Thrones” will be as successful as the original, which over eight seasons became appointment viewing, inspired innumerable imitations, and won 59 Emmys, a record for a drama at the television version of the Academy Awards.

The largest audience for any new original series in HBO’s history, according to a press release on Monday, was 9.986 million viewers. However, some analysts pointed out that the term “new original” might be stretching to describe a spin-off, and that its parent title drew a massive 17.4 million viewers to the premiere of its final season.

Though under close scrutiny as it strives to find its place in a fast shifting entertainment industry driven by the so-called “streaming wars,” the figure nonetheless reflects success for the recently merged Warner Bros Discovery.

On September 2, “The Rings of Power,” another epic of the small screen with a swords and dragons theme that is produced by retail behemoth Amazon’s own streaming service Prime Video and takes place in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, will debut.

“The Rings of Power” has been ordered for five seasons and has been labeled the most expensive show ever produced. It is thought to be a passion project for Amazon’s extremely wealthy founder Jeff Bezos.

Although HBO has numerous more glitzy Westeros-set prequels, sequels, and spin-offs in the works, their overall budget of approximately $1 billion exceeds the $150 million spent so far on “House of the Dragon.”
