The legal battle between Vhong Navarro and Deniece Cornejo is not yet over
Vhong Navarro – The Court of Appeals (CA) ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to file a rape case against the It’s Showtime host related to the complaint made by model-stylist Deniece Cornejo.
The controversy that happened between Vhong and Deniece was one of the most shocking showbiz stories back in 2014. Vhong appeared before the media with his swollen face with bruises as he claimed that Deniece’s friends caused the injury. However, Deniece claimed that Vhong raped him when he went to her house.
In 2018, the DOJ junked the rape case against the noontime show host. Based on the report from CNN Philippines, the DOJ’s reason for junking the case against Vhong was the “major inconsistencies” in Deniece’s complaint-affidavits.
In 2020, the same thing happened. The justice department once again junked the case against Vhong Navarro. This time, the reason that the agency cited was it was “appearing that the s#xual encounter between Cornejo and Navarro was consensual.”
On July 31, CA contradicted this decision of the DOJ. In a statement that CA released, the agency stated that it was wrong for the DOJ to deny the petition of Deniece for review on the ground that there was inconsistency in her complaint-affidavits.
CA also stressed that DOJ’s preliminary investigation is not the venue to determine who is guilty or innocent and that credibility issues should be adjudged during the trial itself. “Ultimately, it falls upon the trial court to determine who between Navarro and Cornejo speaks the truth. Cornejo decries attempted rape on the night of January 22, 2014 while Navarro denies any wrongdoing on his part,” the statement from CA stressed.
The Court of Appeals ordered the Taguig prosecutor’s office to file rape by s#xual intercourse and acts of lasciviousness charges against Vhong Navarro. As of this writing, the camp of the It’s Showtime host is yet to release a statement.
