Enolva explained that it is rare to find a Megamouth Shark in the ocean. In fact, the number of megamouth sharks in various regions all around the world will not exceed 100. It is also considered an endangered species.

It was the third time that a megamouth shark has been found in Bicol.

“Ang megamouth shark ay isa sa pinakapambihirang marine organism and hopefully, kung ito ay agad na ma-i-report sa atin, patay man o buhay, kasi in terms of conservation status, least concerned pa ito o ‘yung sinasabi nating data deficient a kulang pa ‘yung datos,” Enolva said.

Over the past few years, the sightings of deep-sea creatures in shallow waters were linked to natural disasters.  The appearance of oarfish and slender ribbon fish along with the coastal areas allegedly indicates an impending calamity, according to Japanese beliefs.

The Japanese folklore claims that oarfish is a prophet of doom indicating an impending disaster because of its ability to discern irregularities happing in the sea bed. Due to this, many people start to conclude that sighting of deep-sea fish is related to earthquakes.
